Balder's Dream is a prequel to Heroes of Valhalla following the adventures of Prince Balder, Thor and other Asgardians in their youth.
Hod bastard son of Odin has been sent east to be fostered by a neighboring king. There he becomes a warrior in his own right and falls in love with King Nep's daughter. When Nep's kingdom is besieged by enemies he calls on the aid of Odin of Asgard. Help arrives in the form of Balder the one trueborn son of Odin.
Balder the craven who had been plagued by nightmares from a young age. But he is a changed man. He is now the Golden Prince. Fierce in battle, wise in counsel, and fair to look upon.
Balder's Dream is a story of love and triumph, jealousy and despair. It is a story that shapes the future of Asgard.

As far as reading order goes you can read it before or after you read Heroes of Valhalla. I personally think it works better to read it after, but either works.
