Reviews can be a mixed bag but so far I have been lucky. I have gotten quite a bit of positive feedback on my first book. There was one review though that really stuck out to me and made me smile.
This review gets to the heart of what I do and what I am trying to accomplish with my writing.
I have had a few discussions recently about who my intended audience is and who it is I am writing for. The truth is that I am my own intended audience. I write the things that I would have wanted to read in my late teens and early twenties.
That’s not to say I am writing young adult fiction or even things that are overly appropriate for teenagers. It means that I am trying to write the kind of story that would have sparked my imagination and gave me a sense of awe.
There are a few that come to mind off hand Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles, David Gemmell’s Troy series, and of course Lord of the Rings. These were the stories that I fell in love with. The action, the characters, the worlds they crafted, and most importantly the heart in each tale.
That is what I am trying to do for readers.
So now to the review…
Honestly anytime I get a five star review I am extremely thankful, but this particular one hit different, especially because he is a complete stranger.
What I loved about it was how I was able to in some small way recreate the experience he had when he was a young man.
Those aren’t new books either. Poul Anderson wrote them in the 50s and 70s. And he’s an award winning author so that’s cool.
What Robert experienced as a young man is what I hope to do for young readers today.
