Reimagining Norse Mythology
My recent appearance on the "Writers Are People Too" Podcast. Plus Christmas and more!
I was recently interviewed by Matt on the “Writers Are People Too’ Podcast. I really appreciate him having me on. It was a fun time and I enjoyed being able to vocalize some of the thoughts behind my storytelling.
Here is his summary of the interview:
“Join me and author C.K. Kesterson for an exclusive look behind the scenes of his new novel, "Heroes of Valhalla." In this in-depth interview, Kesterson discusses his captivating reimagining of classic Norse myths, featuring iconic characters like Thor, Loki, and Odin. Discover how he crafted the intricate world of "Heroes of Valhalla," from the fall of empires to the rise of legends. Gain valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of being a full-time author, as Kesterson shares his personal journey. Don't miss this opportunity to delve into the world of Norse mythology and learn from a talented storyteller.”
There was one portion of the interview that stood out to me the most. Around the 17:30 mark he asked me what makes my story unique compared to other retellings. This questions gets at the heart of what I was trying to do with Heroes of Valhalla. I wanted to create a world that felt real with flawed human characters. Instead of immortal gods we find that Thor, Odin, and the others are merely humans. Larger than life humans who do great deeds, but humans nonetheless.
The stories of their exploits that are told and passed down from generation to generation eventually could become the legends we know today.
I used a a quote from Lord of the Rings to help express this thought.
And here is a quote from Bernard Cornwell another author who has been a huge inspiration for me.
Both quotes get at this idea that real deeds are the things that over time become myth and legend. And that is what I hope to accomplish with Heroes of Valhalla.
